2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Electric Boxster Engine, Price, & Release Date – Porsche appears to be really embracing the car industry’s electric future. The brand’s first solely electric model, the Taycan, is nearing manufacturing, and the company confirmed just recently that the next generation of its most popular vehicle, the Macan crossover, will be EV-only. Now, it appears to be like the company’s entry-level 718 sports car models could quickly follow fit.
Autocar spoke with Porsche chairman Oliver Blume, who confirmed that the company is currently testing EV prototypes of the 718, even though hybrid versions are also probable. “We have prototypes of the 718 operating in electric now, and a hybrid prototype is being built,” Blume informed Autocar. “If you seem to the next generation of individuals cars it is probable, though it is not really obvious whether it might be plug-in hybrid or hybrid.”
With respect to Autocar, the next generation of 718 will use Porsche’s new PPE architecture, just like the Taycan. Reportedly, the current 718 architecture can only house ample power packs to assist a maximum pure electric range of 186 miles. That wasn’t adequate for Porsche, so the company intends to include kind of hybrid drivetrain alternative when the present-gen car is refreshed, well before the next-gen EV presents itself. Whether or not it’ll be a typical hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid like the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid has but to be determined.
We spoke to Porsche’s soon-retiring sports car chief, August Achleitner, at the Geneva Motor Show last calendar month, who advised us the current-gen 718 will probably adhere around until 2023. Autocar also reports that, like the Macan, Porsche could offer the current 718 next to the new EV version for a couple of years just before phasing out the gasoline car.

Rates for the 718 GTS starts off at $80,850 for the Cayman, and $82,950 for the Boxster, which include a $1050 vacation spot charge. Shipping is expected to start in March 2019.
